Bangladesh climate is considered to be amongst the wettest in the world, with areas around its hills receiving 5,080 mm of rain per year while levels remain extremely high in most parts of the country, averaging around 1,525 mm per year. Bangladesh receives most of its rainfall between June and September – in other words during the monsoon – while between November and February rains falls at a considerably lower pace and frequency.
As a whole, Bangladesh climate is categorized as monsoon and is characterized by its hot and rainy summers and its dry winters. Temperatures hover around 26 C (78 F) in January who is also considered to be the coolest month of the year, rising significantly during April – by far the warmest month – reaching highs between 33 to 36C (91 to 96 F).
Unfortunately Bangladesh is under the constant threat of the devastating cyclones that originate over the Bay of Bengal and hit the country with all their might in the periods of April to May and September to November. As they are also accompanied by surging waves, these storms cause great damage and often result in loss of life. As a matter of fact, Bangladesh was the scene of one of 20th century’s worst natural disasters when in November 1970 around 500,000 lost their lives when a cyclone hit the country, leaving behind devastation and disaster.
